Coffee and its useful properties

Recent studies show that coffee assuages asthma bouts and allergies, prevents tooth decay, activates burning of fats in the body, replenishes potassium deficit and contributes to the improvement of the cardiovascular function. Furthermore, coffee as well as tea is a powerful source of antioxidants.

Coffee is a source of vitamin P needed to strengthen blood vessels.

Types of coffee


The main types of coffee are:

  • Roasted coffee beans;
  • Roasted and ground coffee;
  • Soluble (instant) coffee (roasted and ground coffee beans are processed with special technology).

How do taste and aroma of coffee appear ?


When exposed to heat coffee beans acquire dark colour and change in their chemical composition, i.e. the substances contained in beans are transformed and the taste and aroma of coffee are thus formed.

Depending on the temperature and duration there are three major types of roast:

  • Light (weak or Viennese) roast gives to coffee beans light brown color; light acidity can be tasted in brewed coffee.

how is coffee grown ?


There are several botanical species of coffee plants. However coffee consumers are interested in only two of them: Arabica (or Arabian coffee) that is valued for its bright flavour and  mild taste and Robusta (or Congolese coffee) that has a strong rich taste.

Coffee beans are the seeds of coffee tree. They develop inside coffee berries and there are usually two beans in each berry. Coffee berries are harvested when they become red in colour.

How did coffee conquer the world ?


The most widespread legend says that mankind discovered the amazing properties of coffee thanks to the Ethiopian shepherd named Kaldi. One day he noticed that the goats that he grazed on the mountain slopes became very agile after eating leaves and berries of some wild bush. Succumbing to curiosity Kaldi decided to taste the red berries resembling cherry. He felt such an unusual burst of energy afterwards that he could stay awake for three days.

From Ethiopia coffee beans got to Yemen where coffee turned into a home-made drink.
